The Peugeot RCZ R

VS'is the supercharged version of the RCZ coupe, developed by Peugeot Sport.

This model, emblematic of the brand's know-how in terms of design and driving sensations, is equipped with the new engine essence turbocharged 1.6lTPwhose power was increased to 270 horsepower. Rejecting only 145g/km, it places the  R in a new register of performance and efficiency.

In line with this engine, specific ground connections associated with a Torsen limited slip differential promise efficiency and dynamic sensations of a very high level...

Performance and efficiency, signed Peugeot Sport

With 270 hp (199 kW), the RCZ R is the most powerful production thermal model in the brand's history.

It accelerates strongly with 0 to 100 km reached in 5.9 seconds.

This result is obtained thanks to the control of engine downsizing, aerodynamic optimization and weight reduction. This new 270 hp THP engine with only 1.6 liters of displacement sets a specific power record in the category; with nearly 170 hp/l, it is even among the best in the world for a production vehicle and already meets the Euro 6 depollution standard.

The work carried out on aerodynamics has made it possible to increase rear downforce thanks to a new spoiler, which promotes stability at high speed, without degrading drag.

The search for weight reduction also guided the development of specific parts, a saving of 17 kg was thus obtained compared to a 200 THP. With a mass of 1280 kg, the R therefore has a weight/power ratio of only 4.7 kg/hp.

Its seat lowered by 10 mm and its 19″ wider and raised wheels, for the benefit of grip and traction, give it an even more expressive posture, it seems “glued” to the ground.

Its specific two-tone diamond/matte black rims, with a technical and sporty style, are signed with an R milled directly into the alloy. They have been designed to accommodate and optimize the cooling of the new oversized brakes (380 mm), whose red calipers at the front are signed Peugeot Sport.

The large, perfectly integrated fixed rear wing guarantees better aerodynamic downforce while stretching the silhouette when viewed from the rear. The specific rear diffuser respects the smooth effect which characterizes the rear of the RCZ and integrates two imposing chrome-plated and symmetrical exhaust pipes, a sign of an exhaust line reworked for performance and sound.

The red Peugeot lettering on the grille and its R monogram, which can also be found at the rear, complete the exterior signature of the R.

Customization and wide range of equipment

Available in 4 colors: Eritrea Red, Perla Nera Black, Sidobre Gray and Opal White, the Peugeot RCZR also offers a customization offer consisting of a glossy or satin carbon roof, body stickers and black mirror shells.

The high level of safety and comfort equipment is completed with Xenon headlights with headlight washers and the WIP Nav Plus multimedia system.

A cockpit that awakens the senses

Opening the door reveals a cockpit like the dress, dedicated to the pleasure and sensations of the driver, it instantly immerses the “driver” in a subtly elitist sporting atmosphere.

From the door sill signed Peugeot Sport, the sporty and exclusive character is reinforced. The red stitching runs through the soft, technical and rewarding material of the dashboard, as well as the leather of the steering wheel, gear lever gaiter, door panels, armrests and seats. The latter, with a new sporty and sharp design, are dressed in a mix of full-grain Nappa leather and black Alcantara and are branded with the “R” monogram.

Chromed and set in red, the “R” character seems to emerge from a plate with brushed aluminum treatment and 4 visible screws, which marks the central console. Inspired by aviation, it symbolizes precision and elegantly bears the imprint of Peugeot Sport.

Intense driving sensations

“Descending” into his vehicle, the driver discovers an ergonomic driving position, ideal for enjoying the dynamic qualities of his RCZ R. The reduced steering wheel, the short gear lever, the specific aluminum knob highlighted in red and the new Bucket seats developed by Peugeot Sport – with reinforced support and consistent with the performance level of the R – actively contribute to the driving sensations.

Along with sight and touch, hearing is not forgotten!

The Sound System associated with a specific intake line, as well as a reworked exhaust line, allows you to enjoy the sporty character of the new engine to the rhythm of acceleration and gear changes.

The sporting temperament of the Peugeot RCZ R is also reflected in the figures; maximum speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited), 0 to 100 km/h achieved in 5.9 s, the 400 m standing start in 14.2 s and the 1000 m in 25.4 s. The acceleration is also at a very high level, going from 80 to 120 km/h in 6.8 seconds in the last gear.

The lowered center of gravity, improved aerodynamic finesse, specific axle settings (tracks, toe and camber, +0.5 inch wider rims) and 235/40 R19 tires optimize grip and guarantee road holding. outstanding.

The ground connections adopt new shock absorber laws, increased spring stiffnesses and reversed anti-roll centering, which make it possible to offer great agility.

The Torsen limited slip differential makes it possible to make maximum use of the strong torque available from 1900 rpm for the benefit of traction, it offers the R good stability when braking and the ability to maintain a tight trajectory inside bends .

Its performance and agility are also the result of numerous development and validation sessions on the circuit, particularly with Peugeot Sport test drivers.
Their demands in terms of braking have naturally oriented the technical definition towards fixed 4-piston calipers, which allow a significant gain in stiffness and therefore in pedal stroke, while promoting the reduction of unsprung masses. The discs, with a diameter of 380mm and a thickness of 32mm, are mounted floating on an aluminum bowl. This contributes to weight reduction and cooling, as do the internal ventilation of the disc, the optimization of which comes from Alcon's experience in competition.
All this ensures the braking system has foolproof endurance and offers the Peugeot RCZ R exceptional safety and performance, including less than 61m to brake from 130 to 0 km/h.

The RCZ R is equipped with a new 1.6 THP turbo engine with direct gasoline injection. It develops its maximum power of 199 kW (270 hp) at 6000 rpm and its maximum torque of 330 Nm from 1900 rpm and up to 5500 rpm.

This new engine benefits from in-depth development, many parts have evolved or been entirely redeveloped to obtain this performance and respond to sporting use with the robustness of a production engine.

The engine block itself is reinforced by a specific heat treatment before machining to reinforce its robustness.

The Twin Scroll turbo was developed specifically to benefit from ideal sizing for this application and this level of performance. Associated with a steel exhaust manifold with a new architecture inspired by racing, it helps maintain higher operating temperatures.

The new pistons, ensuring a compression ratio of 9.2, developed with Mahle Motorsport, adopt a forged structure, as well as a grade of aluminum used in Formula 1, their cooling is ensured by 2 jets.

The connecting rods also evolve to withstand use at high engine speeds. Their polymer-coated bushings make it possible to withstand higher cylinder pressures, patented and presented in 2011 by Mahle, they are applied in series as a world first on the Peugeot RCZ R.

Daily comfort and pleasure

The R was developed as a competition version by Peugeot Sport to meet sporting use on the circuit, but it also knows how to be pleasant and civilized for daily use on the road.

The powertrain calibrations combine the requirements of sporty driving on the circuit and that of daily use. Depending on the pressure of the accelerator pedal and the engine speed, revealing the type of driving adopted by the driver, his behavior will be more comfort – city or rather sport – efficiency.
In addition, the level of torque obtained from very low revs allows dynamic restarts and very good everyday pleasure on the road.

The typing of the suspensions makes it possible to improve the agility and incisive character of the R with a compromise which preserves a level of comfort close to that of the 200 THP.
Finally, the noble materials and ergonomics of the driving position, its high-end equipment and contained consumption in the context of normal use, of 6.3 l/100 km on the combined cycle – benchmark in the category -, also make the RCZ R a comfortable and easy to live with sports coupe off the track.
